**Rhizome** (1985) — a mail art work by Shimamoto, created for the "Long Life to Mail Art" project. The piece draws on the philosophical concept of the *rhizome* — a non-hierarchical, decentralized network of growth without a single origin or endpoint, as theorized by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari ([see: Rhizome (philosophy)]). As a distributed, ever-expanding network of exchange among artists across borders, mail art itself can be seen as a rhizomatic practice.

A reproduction of another copy of the work, sent to Peter Küstermann, which can be researched in the Artpool archive.
