The Year of the Tent,
Scotland, UK, 1989

Photos reproduced, if not stated otherwise, are by Pete Horobin
„the climax of DATA was the year of the tent – daily A4 DATA sheets were printed on waterproof plastic as a precaution against the scottish climate – they were stencilled daily & gave internal measurements - pulse temperature blood pressure mood stool & food eaten - external measurements were map references time temperature barometric pressure & weather conditions – visitors to the tent were invited to complete DATA sheets during their camping collaboration - on the reverse of each sheet horobin wrote a letter to a correspondent - @ the end of each month he returned to the attic to photocopy & mail out DATA sheets - throughout the year of the tent horobin tramped all over scotland from shetland to the borders & dundee to the outer hebrides – he photo-documented the centre of many OS maps – signed the landscape with DATA – bringing the 10-year artwork to a conclusion by walking from iona to glasgow carrying a white stone to place on the tomb of saint kentigern in glasgow cathedral”

Peter Haining: A History, manuscript, 2024, p. 5.
„during this year the attic was rented to malcolm dickson & horobin was in receipt of what the government called enterprise allowance – a financial support scheme for small businesses – horobin was signed up to this as a freelance journalist

there was a strong sense of purpose throughout the year of the tent – & a structure – each month had a proscribed route-plan – in january horobin walked across scotland from knoydart to dundee – in february he walked the length of the river tay to its estuary @ dundee – in march he travelled to the orkney islands – et cetera et cetera – in december he walked from iona to glasgow

so this structure enabled him to return to dundee @ the end of every month to photocopy DATA sheets & post to correspondents – on the reverse side of DATA sheets was a handwritten letter – correspondence activity was a keystone of the year’s intent horobin’s address remained constant – the attic @ 37 union street dundee

there is no map but – the DATA sheets are very accurate in their map co-ordinates – it would be possible for a researcher to construct a map from the DATA given”
